"What is your WHY?"
I was at a workshop today and the speaker asked “what is your “WHY”?”.
He said, “You know your “WHAT” and “HOW” in relation to the things that you do, but “WHY” do you do them ?” Suddenly my brain started to buzz because that is the question that has been on the tip of my thoughts for months.
This lecture was not in the Photography field. In my life outside of Photography I am a Speech Pathologist and educator working with teens with disabilities. Yet, when the question was posed, I immediately thought of Photography and the Facebook group Inside the Photobox Photography and Photoshop that I started almost 2 years ago, and I thought…WHAT IS MY “WHY”?
My “WHY”…started 7 years ago on a whim. I was in a place in my life where I needed to jump out of my comfort zone and do something that was hard. Really hard! And do it FOR ME. Something that challenged both my brain and my dormant creative side that had been waiting oh so patiently to find it’s voice. Thus..photography.
Over the last 7 years, I have been blessed to have won awards and have my work shown in galleries. I have been thrilled to have seen my art on book covers and magazines. Being asked to be a Sirui, USA Brand Ambassador and acquiring agent representation has been more than I could have even dreamt of when I picked up my first camera not even 10 years ago. Actually, the only thing I truly dreamed of back then was to figure out how the heck to take photos in manual mode!
All of it was an unexpected blessing.
Yet, NONE of it is my WHY.
Seven years after I started my creative exploration, I can now finally find the words to explain my “WHY”.
-CREATIVE SELF FULFILLMENT.
-CHALLENGING MYSELF TO FIND SUCCESS FROM THINGS THAT ARE HARD.
-LEAPING OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE TO BECOME MORE THAN I WAS YESTERDAY.
These are my “WHY”. These are the reasons that I am now delving into learning to paint, and it will be my “WHY” for whatever it is that I need to explore creatively in the future.
EVERYTHING that has occurred beyond my "WHY" is a truly just a byproduct. Not an accident, because I have worked very hard to get to the place that I am; but a byproduct of my "WHY".
At the end of 2017, I began the Facebook group Inside the Photo box Photography and Photoshop, where the member photographers are happily photographing subjects inside of actual boxes. I didn’t invent this photography, but when I was introduced to it I loved it! It challenged me to become a better photographer. It challenged me to use my lighting equipment and to think creatively. It challenged me to become more proficient at photoshop and to become a digital artist. As a byproduct of these challenges, a group was formed on Facebook. And suddenly I was helping people to learn and grow, all the while I was learning and growing right along with them!
Inspiring people to TAKE THE JUMP WITH ME is my WHY for this phenomenal Facebook group. After all, my background has always been in education. Watching everyone in the group take a leap of faith in themselves and to learn to live outside of their comfort zone has been one of my deepest pleasures. Watching members help members become successful while creating a culture of warmth and fun, learning, sharing and helping has been a true blessing . I could not be more proud of what this group has evolved into and I am excited to to see where it goes.
That is my "WHY" for the group.
All the rest is a byproduct.
So now I ask you, what is your WHY?
